Francisco Fernando estaba en una visita oficial en Bosnia. Era llevado en un automóvil para conocer la ciudad de Sarajevo. Hubo muchos intentos fallidos de dispararle por diferentes motivos. Suspende las reuniones oficiales y exige ser llevado al hospital donde se encontraban los heridos. Después de muchas maniobras, el chófer que conducía el automóvil se pierde. Casualmente, uno de los integrantes del grupo extremista llamado Gavrilo Princip, que estaba en un café, lo ve; el automóvilal estar perdido retrocede y Princip se encontraba a escasos metros de Francisco Fernando. Saca su arma y dispara dos veces. Una bala hiere directamente a Francisco Fernando y la otra rebota hiriendo a Sofía su esposa, la cual estaba embarazada. Ambos mueren después de unos 20 minutos.

The detonating event of the conflict was the murder of Francisco Archduke Ferdinand of Austria and his wife, Sofía Chotek, in Sarajevo on 28 June 1914 at the hands of young nationalist Serbian student Gavrilo Princip, Member of the Serbian group "YoungBosnia", linked to the nationalist group, Black Hand, which supported the unification of Bosnia with Serbia. Franz Ferdinand was the heir of the Austro-Hungarian Crown after the death of his cousin, Rodolfo de Habsburgo (in 1889) and his father Luis Carlos de Austria (in 1896). His killing precipitated the Declaration of war of Austria against Serbia that triggered the First World War.
TheAustro-Hungarian Empire demanded, with the support of the German Empire, investigate crime in Serbian territory, since it considered that the paneslavista Black Hand organization had connection with the secret services of that country. The Austro-Hungarian Empire gave an ultimatum on July 7 to Serbia, which, with Russian support, did not accept all the conditions imposed, in particular the participationof Austrian police in investigations in Serbian territory.
Before the refusal, on July 28, 1914, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. Then on 29 July Russia ordered general mobilization. Based on military alliances, 1 August, Germany declared war on Russia, considering the mobilization as an act of war against Austria-Hungary. Given this, and in virtue, Russian’s 1894 military alliance Francetook some precautionary measures on its borders. Germany, knowing agitation that reigned in France because of the unexpected attack against Serbia and the Russian mobilization declared you war on France on 3 August.
