Driving Questions:
¿Qué valora tanto la gente hasta morir por ello?
¿Por qué arriesgan sus vidas para entrar ilegalmente a los EE. UU.?

• Background:

Very close to the U.S./Mexico border near Tijuana there are hundreds of white crosses that line the
Mexican side of the border wall. Each cross bears the name of a person who died while attempting to
cross intothe United States illegally. These crosses not only serve as a visual reminder of the
lengths to which people will go to achieve the “American dream,” but they also stand as an homage to
each individual that they represent

Project Description:

Spanish IV/V students will explore the reasons why people choose to risk their lives in the attempt to
enter the United States illegally fromMexico.

1. Students will investigate the issues surrounding immigration and will present their research in a
presentation to the class.

2. Students will create and assume the identity a person that has struggled to cross the border and
will write a fictionalized narrative that explains what could have driven that particular person to risk
his/her life.

3. Students will create anexhibition that presents their work to the school community.

Learning goals:

• Students will research in Spanish the issues surrounding immigration today.

• Students will present and discuss the reasons for and issues surrounding illegal immigration into the United States

• Students will use the past tenses to write the story of a fictionalized person who crossed the border

• Studentswill use rich vocabulary to write a description of personality, appearance and origin the person whose identity they have created.

• Students will listen to personal narratives from people of Mexico who have crossed or tried to cross the border

• Students will analyze the reasons why people from those regions leave for the U.S.

• Students will create an exposition that shares theinformation that they have learned with the school community.

México y los Estados Unidos son vecinos y una relación entre ellos ha existido por mucho tiempo. En
el pasado, los dos países se lucharon en una guerra, pero ahora, la situación ha mejorado y hay
relaciones económicas entreellos. Sin embargo, la inmigración, específicamente la inmigración
ilegal, de México a los Estados Unidos ha causado tensión por muchos años. La historia de la
frontera causa mucha hostilidad entre las personas mexicanos y los estadounidenses. Ahora es muy
difícil para inmigrar en los Estados Unidos legalmente porque se necesita una visa de inmigración, el
apoyo de un esponsor o un estadode asilo. También es muy cara para los inmigrantes inmigrar
legalmente porque necesitan pagar ciento cincuenta dolores pero también necesitan tener casi cinco
mil dolores en una cuenta. Por eso, toma mucho tiempo y es muy difícil para entrar legalmente. Por
lo tanto muchas personas entran ilegalmente. El número de inmigrantes mexicanos han aumentado
mucho. Por ejemplo en 1970, la poblaciónde inmigrantes Mexicanos era de 800,000 pero en 2000
había 8 millones de inmigrantes Mexicanos. Ahora hay más de diez millones de inmigrantes ilegales
en los Estados Unidos. También, sesenta por ciento de los inmigrantes son de México.
Casi todas las personas que inmigran ilegalmente a los Estados Unidos arriesgan sus vidas.
Hay muchos ejemplos. Un ejemplo es que muchos mexicanos usancoyotes. En este caso, los
coyotes no son animales sino que son hay personas que los mexicanos pueden pagar más o menos
mil dólares para transportarlos a los Estados Unidos. Otras personas montan los trenes--pero no en
el tren--están encima del tren y es muy peligroso. Otras tratan de cruzar por esconderse en carros o
camiones. Dado que muchas personas cruzan la frontera entre los Estados...
