Type 5D THREE-WAY HEAT RECLAIM VALVE
for Refrigerants 12-22-134a-502
Today more and more applications are utilizing "heat reclaim" as a means of providing a supplementary or even a primary heat source to lower energy costs. Heat reclaim is best described as theprocess of reclaiming heated air rejected at the condenser by diverting it to an area requiring heat. By far the largest user of heat reclaim is a supermarket since a constant supply of heated air from the many refrigerated cases and coolers is available. Other applications using heat reclaim that are becoming more popular are hot water heating and convenience stores. To meet these smaller systemcapacity requirements, Sporlan has added the "5D" Heat Reclaim Valve to the line of heat reclaim valves.

OPERATION
All Sporlan's 3-way Heat Reclaim Valves have a pilot operated design that shifts the refrigerant flow to either the normal condenser or the reclaim condenser based on the heating requirements of the application. The operation ofthe "5D" is identical to that of the previous models.
RECLAIM CONDENSER COMPRESSOR DISCHARGE 4.31 6.44 NORMAL CONDENSER
NORMAL (OUTDOOR) CONDENSER — De-energized
"B" Type — When the pilot solenoid valve is de-energized, high side pressure is prevented from entering the lower pilot port while the upper pilot port is opened to suction pressure. This creates a pressure differential across thepiston-seat assembly that moves the assembly upward, closing the re-claim port and opening the normal condenser port. Pump out of the reclaim condenser is accomplished by using a split piston ring or a drilled orifice through the piston that bleeds refrigerant from the idle reclaim condenser past the piston to suction. Once the reclaim condenser has been pumped out and reduced to suction pressure,ALL FLOW CEASES, which eliminates high to low side bleed and the associated capacity loss.
"C" Type — As with the "B" Type, when the pilot solenoid valve is de-energized, high side pressure is prevented from entering the lower pilot port while the upper pilot port is opened to suction pressure. The pressure differential created moves the piston-seat assembly upward, closing the reclaim port andopening the normal condenser port. This eliminates high to low side bleed and the associated capacity loss with the system in the normal condenser mode.
Page 2 / BULLETIN 30-10-1 RECLAIM (REHEAT) CONDENSER — Energized "B" and "C" Type — When the pilot valve is energized, high side pressure is permitted to flow through the lower pilot port while the upper pilot port is closed to suction. Highside pressure acting on top of the piston-seat assembly moves the assembly downward, opening the reclaim port and closing the normal condenser port. With the system in the reclaim mode, no high to low side bleed occurs since the upper pilot port is closed. 4.Incomplete magnetic circuit due to omission of the plunger assembly. 5. Mechanical interference with movement of plunger which may be caused bya deformed enclosing tube. Failure To Shift To Reclaim Mode 1. Coil burnout (see coil burnout above). 2. MOPD greater than specification. 3. Restricted high pressure pilot connection. Failure To Shift To Normal Mode 1. Stray voltage holding plunger up. 2. Restricted or capped suction connection on pilot.
INSTALLATION/SERVICE
SOLDERING PRECAUTIONS — Solder connections on Sporlan Type 5D HeatReclaim Valve are copper and any of the commonly used types of solder are satisfactory with these materials. Regardless of the type of solder used, it is important to avoid over-heating the valve, to prevent damage of the internal synthetic parts. The torch tip should be large enough to avoid prolonged heating of the connection during the brazing operation. Overheating can also be minimized by...
