ABSTRACT

This study, which has been made by five students of the Rey Juan Carlos University, consists on researching how low or high is the school failure in gifted students contrasting it with the public opinion.
This research has been made carrying on surveys related to the topic and an interview made in CIDIS1 .It is based on the descriptive methodology studied in class, usingthe different data sources name above, to help us describe the phenomenon.
INTRODUCTION
We wanted to choose a topic which could help us as future teachers, and at the same time that the results were surprising, so we have selected the school failure in gifted students, because many people think that for the simple fact of having a higher intellectual coefficient they can have higher marksand a brilliant future, but on the contrary things are not like that.
The research question that we think is the most interesting to carry on with this topic is: “Is there a high level of school failure in gifted students in Spain?” .

The main reason of having chosen this question is to demonstrate that the percentage of this school failure in so intelligent children is too high. This is because the Spanish Education System is not properly developed to carry on the necessary process identifying gifted students, and what’s more, to help them with an especial education.

Gifted children need to be motivated in order to not get bored or frustrated with their studies. They need the support of the families and the school community. The major problem they present is thedyssynchrony which consists on an irregular development of the intellectual, physical and emotional skills. This leads to a situation in which the child can feel stress, upset, have a low self-confidence, etc.
According to the Spanish Law, the ones who are in charge of identifying gifted children are the pedagogues and the orientation teams. The problem is that there aren’t a number ofspecified people enough to carry on with this responsibility. In our country there is a lack of degrees centered on these studies. Besides, teachers have to recognized this capacities in their pupils, and nowadays, when children have low performance they attached it to attention deficit disorder or laziness.

The family has also a determinant role in the development of the child relatedin finding out the special skills and behavior as well as helping them once that they have identify his capabilities with the necessary support.

LITERATURE REVIEW

After having made a deep research on different articles about gifted and talented students and the school failure to support our research, we have found that these ten references are the most suitable.
As we arestudying above all the Spanish Education, most of them are in Spanish.

1. “El 1.5% de los alumnos de 6 a 12 años son superdotados”, Rosaura Calleja, Madrid.
We have found this article very interesting because it is the review of a study made in Comunidad de Madrid, in which involves a lot of schools.

2. “El 68% de los niñossuperdotados fracasa o deja los estudios”, EFE, Madrid, 2008.
This article is very useful because it includes a real case about a gifted child that wasn’t recognized by the EOEP (Equipos de Orientación Educativa y Psicopedagógica), which show us the lack of professionals.

3. “Niñossuperdotados: cómo descubrirlos”, Mª Isabel Peguero Álvarez.
We think this article is very complete because it treats all the aspects of gifted students.

4. “Los niños superdotados sufren fracaso escolar”, Marisol Nuevo.
In our opinion this article helps the reader to understand better the reasons of the school failure of gifted students....
