The Case For The Tectonic analyzes how the development of the structure creates the entity of a building rather than the ornamental pieces of itsfacade. It questions which are the points to take in consideration when defining tectonics and what a building really is in terms of method and material. Tectonicslies between a series of opposites but above all is the relation between the ontological and the representative. The reading presents several points form Germanarchitects and what they understand from the development and relationship in the built environment in relation to structure and form.
The reading Geometry, Algorithm,Pattern on Ito’s Serpentine Pavilion starts by defining geometry as an animation and how the relation between a point and a line can create harmony in a space and howthe basic geometrical rules have been used in architecture. It then moves on stating that tectonics should be viewed as a serial punctuation generated by complexprocesses but also maintaining the aesthetic ideas of ancient architecture.
Ito proposed two questions in the development of the Serpentine Pavilion: how to float aslab and how to transform the box. By solving these questions, structural and material issues were studied and then developed in creating the idea of open space, translucency within the space and structural connection to the ground by collector zones created through the intersection of lines going back to the root of geometry.
