Gender violence

According to article 1 of the UNESCO Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women (DEVW). “Any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrarydeprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life”.

We are going to talk about gender violence in five different countries, showing the reality of this issue in Spain, China, Mali, Sweden and France, and according to three different points:

1. Rates of gender violence and its evolution.

China: According to the survey, 30% families in China has domestic violence. On century90 time of domestic violence than 80 time rise 25.4%. In two hundred and seventy million Chinese families, each year about one hundred thousand family due to family violence and disintegration.The victims of family violence in the vast majority of women, accounted for about 72%.

France: Every 2 days, in France, a woman dies because of domestic violence; that is to say: threat, confinement, rapesand murders. It affects at least two million women which are from 18 to 59 years old. The number of victims is stable since 20 years, there is not an augmentation of case but there is more statement to the police.

Mali: The case of Mali is quite different compared to the other countries analyzed; we could not find precise and public data about the cases of domestic violence against women, thesilence that involves this type of violence may possibly be the reason of the lack of information. Even so, it is important to mention that according to the Report to the Human Rights Committee in 2003; “Although the Penal Code was amended in 2001, there are no specific provisions outlawing domestic violence (…) domestic violence is an accepted part of daily life in Mali. As such, women rarelyreport instances of domestic violence”.

To get an idea about Mali, the Social Institutions Gender Index 2012 declared that this country is ranked 86 out of 86 and in accordance with the statistics of the Global Gender Gap Index, Mali is in 128 out of 135 countries.

Spain: In reference to the rates, we have noticed that there is not a defined increasing or decreasing evolution of them. TheMinistry of Health, Social Affairs and Equality shows in its statistical studies that, from 2002 to 2010 there are increases and decreases and from 2010 until now we can perceive a clear decreasing.

Sweden:By estimation it is only 20% of all the violence against women that are being reported. The most targeted group ofwomen is the single women with children. They report three times more violence crimes than any other group of women. Between 2000 – 2007 the amount of reports increased with 31%. The gender violence statistics in Sweden gives me the conclusion that the number of women that have reported about some form of gender violence has increased over that last decade. (Feministiskt Initiativ, 2011 p, 4)2. The most common form of violence against women.

China: Of domestic violence in China mainly in the form of sexual abuse and rape in marriage.In the family of women without proper respect, treat women as planning tools and a vent tool, progressive destruction.



France: Domestic violence begins with psychological violence like abuses and threats, about 22 % , and then physical violencearrives, about 3 % and it finishes with sexual violence about 0.7 % (2008, Violence did to women, Insee, 2012). Therefore, we can conclude that the most common form of violence is psychological one.

Mali: Malian society remains having a high level of tolerance about violence against women. Physical violence against women is almost normal and highlights the female mutilation.According to the...
