Something Borrowed

1) The action takes place in New York City, Manhattan to be exact. Then some of the movie also takes place at a countryside and London.
2) I think that this movie shows us the lives of thirty-something upper class middle in the romantic way. Not everyone is going to have this happen to them once they reach thirty and maybe it won’t ever happen to them. This movie is a bit fictional but theactual plot of the main character Rachel having her mid-life crisis of being thirty and still unmarried and without a boyfriend seems to be common amongst the population nowadays. Like many other successful business women, she found it hard to find someone to share her life with due to the fact that going to college and getting her law degree took up most of her young adult years. Careers like lawand medicine take up at least six years or less of someone’s life. After that is over you have to figure out where you are going to live and how you are going to support yourself. With all of this going on many women can’t find the time to look for a partner, if they haven’t found him beforehand. So this movie parts from a realistic plot of having trouble with finding a husband at thirty and thenjust revolves around this main idea with the whole drama of falling in love with her college flame and now best friend’s fiancée.
3) The characters were all very realistic. Each of them was a typical stereotype in today’s society. I think I liked them all equally. None of them actually had anything that stroked me as amazing or unbelievable. All of them are normal people in their everyday lifesituation. However, if I had to choose I would say that I liked Ethan and Rachel the best. Ethan seems like the childhood friend who would never lie to you. I think I like him a lot because of the fact that he hated to deny the truth, even though he hated to face his own truths about his love life. Rachel is another one of the characters I liked because she is a successful and independent womanwho has studied a good career and can support herself really well. The only thing I dislike about her is the low self-confidence she has when it comes to meeting new people or thinking that she is attractive. I know it’s very common amongst us too but seeing how she gets “played” by Dex is just so innerving.
The characters I liked the least were Claire and Marcus. I disliked Claire because shealso has little self-respect and very low self-esteem to be behind a guy who clearly doesn’t like her at all, let alone love her. She is too desperate to have Ethan, the guy she’s after in the whole movie, fall in love with her. She even goes to the extent that when Ethan falsely claims he’s gay, she tries to turn him back into being a heterosexual. What I like about Claire was that even after allthe chasing she did and after she finally saw that Ethan didn’t reciprocate the feelings, she had the dignity to say to herself that life does go on and at least she tried to be with Ethan. As for Marcus, I don’t like him because he’s the typical guy who thinks he’s sexy and good-looking while really he’s not. He tries to get it on with every new girl he meets and that is just disgusting. Even so,I have to admit I admire his great deal of confidence on himself. Not every guy is confident enough or outspoken enough to actually do what he does.
Dex and Rachel are fit for each other. They make the perfect match because both of them have got a great education level, both are successful, can support themselves, have mature outlooks in life and always use their heads in the most difficultsituations. They compensate each other and we can all see the on-screen chemistry between these two. It is actually quite weird how neither of them ever admitted that they liked each other during those years in college. Usually the one person who knows you the most is the one you’ve shared the most important part of your life with.
