The heads of Easter Island
AMoai is a monolithic stone statue found only on Easter Island or Rapa Nui, pertaining to the Region of Valparaiso, Chile. The moai are the main attraction of Easter Island, whose inhabitants live offtourism and fishing. The meaning of the statues is still uncertain, and there are several theories about these statues. The most common of these is that the statues were carved by the Polynesianinhabitants of the islands, between the twelfth and seventeenth centuries, as representations of deceased ancestors, so that project their mana (supernatural power) over their descendants. It is believed thatwhole mountains were removed for their creation. The volcanic rock could be cut with relative ease with basalt and obsidian tools, giving them their basic form in the quarry itself. Were subsequentlyextracted and partially buried in the vicinity to be carved details. But perhaps most surprising is that these rocks are not just placed there, but embedded in holes carved in the bedrock that formsthe floor of the island. An important detail is that these holes are given in the sections where the road runs uphill. Dr. Love speculates that these holes were placed there to accommodate somemechanism designed to help move the giant stone heads and save drops that otherwise would require a considerable effort. These holes and the curious way in "V" road show us that there are still considerableuncertainties about the system employed by the natives of Easter Island to erect its mysterious moai.
