“ Canterville Chase” was a very big house in the countryside of London. Lord Canterville, the owner, wanted to sell it.
The Otis family was a rich family from New York. The members of this family were Mr. Otis, Mrs. Otis, Washington, the eldest son, Virginia, and the twins, the youngest sons. They moved to London, and they wanted to live in the countryside . They were interested in the chase.Lord Canterville told them that there was a ghost in there, but the Otises did not believe in ghosts, so they bought the chase.

There, in the chase, the housekeeper, Mrs. Umney, was waiting for them. She and the family went to the library, where there was a blood-stain from the ghost´s wife, who had been murdered by her husband. Mr. Otis wanted to remove the stain. But Mrs. Umney didn´t wantthat, because she was afraid of the ghost. However, Washington removed the blood-stain with a stain remover.

Every day the stain reappeared, and every morning Washington removed it. They started to believe in the ghost. But they were not afraid of him.

One night, the ghost, an old man with burning eyes, made noise in the corridor. It was like metal chains. Mr. Otis gave him oil to put on thechains. The ghost was very surprised, everyone was afraid of him, but this family was not. He decided to work harder so he went to the corridor, made a terrible noise and shone a horrible green light. The twins came to the corridor and threw pillows at the ghost. They laughed at him. He was so sad and unhappy.

Every day the blood-stain reappeared, but it changed colour. The Otises laughed atthe stain. But not Virginia, she did not laugh. She was sure that the ghost put the stain on the floor. She felt sorry for the ghost.
One night, the Otis family heard a terrible noise downstairs. The whole family ran out of their bedrooms. There was a suit of armour in the hallway. The ghost was sitting on the floor next to the armour. He had tried to put on the suit of armour to frighten theOtises, but it was too heavy so it had fallen onto the floor. He had hurt himself. Mr. Otis pointed a gun at the ghost. The twins laughed loudly. All the family looked at the ghost. He was very angry, he stood up, gave a loud shout, ran up the stairs and laughed. He had a frightening laugh. However , the Otises were not afraid. They advised him to take a medicine if he was in pain. The ghostdisappeared and went back to the secret room and stayed there during the day. He came out at night and repainted the stain, like every night. And in the morning, like every morning, Washington removed it. But now, he had finished all the paints, all Virginia´s paints.

The ghost planned to frighten the twins. He planned to visit them in the night and turn himself green and make a horrible noise. Thetwins’ bedroom was at the end of the corridor round a corner. He turned the corner, but suddenly he stopped. In front of him was a ghost with burning eyes. The Canterville ghost gave a shout and ran back to his secret room. He felt very frightened. Before daylight came, he went back to the twins´ room. The second ghost was still there, but his eyes were not burning. It was a head made from a pumpkin.There was a card on the floor. It said: “The Otis ghost, the only true Canterville ghost” This made the Canterville ghost very angry.

The ghost stayed in his room for five days. He did not repaint the blood-stain.

After a week, he felt better so he decided to try once more to frighten the Otis twins. Slowly he walked to the twins´ bedroom. The ghost took off his head and carried it. He pushedthe door of the twins´ bedroom. The door banged against the wall. A heavy jug of water fell from the top of the door. He was soaked with water. The twins shouted and laughed. He was a very unhappy ghost.

The Otises did not see the ghost at night again. Virginia was angry with the twins. She defended the ghost. The twins did not listen, but the ghost heard Virginia´s words. It gave him hope....
