The banking concept of education de paulo friere
Here I will outline the education and social aspects of the article “The Banking Concept ofEducation” written by the Brazilian philosopher Paulo Friere. This article criticizes the education that students receive, where the students are good robots that memorize everything that is presented instead oflearning anything. This education leads students to be part of a society of oppressors and oppressed in which the interest of the oppressors lie in changing the consciousness of the oppressed, notthe situation that oppresses them, so they can keep power over the oppressed and rule the world.
Education is supposed to be a process of learning and acquiring knowledge. This can be achieved when aninstructor communicates by having a horizontal relationship in which simultaneously the teacher is the student and the student is the teacher. The educational system of today is different. Teachersfill the students with petrified or worthless information and the students memorize this information without understanding it, instead of learning. If students keep working hard to be great test-takersand have good remembrance, the less likely for them to develop critical thinking. To think is to process information in order to form an opinion. But if we are not critical when processing thisinformation, are we really thinking? Or are we mindlessly accepting other opinions as truth?
When students graduate they go out into life with a degree that in other words says “I’m capable of work” or“congratulations you are the best slave”. They now will be sitting in a chair in front of a desk working for large companies, industries or corporations because they never learned anything. They will nowbe introduced into the world of the oppressors and the oppressed. Oppressors are the people that rule the world or society with money, power or authority.
