The House Of The Mango Street

The novels starts of in the old apartment witch Esperanza’s parents didn’t own. It was a tiny and broken apartment. The pipes were broken and the landlord refused to fix it. So they had to move to adifferent house. Before they moved to The Mango street Mama and Papa explained with hard detail how pretty, big, and spacious the new house was going to be. When it was time to move the whole familyhad to move to the new house and Esperanza was disappointed with the house. It was not what she expected. They moved to a Latino neighborhood in Chicago, the house was tiny.
There is a huge amount ofcharacter. The major characters where Esperanza, Rachel, Lucy, Sally, Nenny, Marin, Papa, Mama, Alice and Cathy. Esperanza is the narrator. She dreams of leaving The Mango Street and own a big house.The time the story takes is about a year or so, Esperanza grows in 2 ways, physically and emotionally. She becomes a mature person. Rachel and Lucy were Esperanza’s best friends. Esperanza met a girlwhich name was Sally. She was physically advanced and more attractive. Sally always abandoned Esperanza to be with boys. She used boys or man to escape her abusive father. Nenny is Esperanza’s littlesister. Esperanza is responsible for Nenny’s actions.
During the year Esperanza learns many things. She also started developing a different way of thinking. She started enjoying when boys see herdance and she kissed an older man. One day Esperanza was with Sally and she abandoned Esperanza and some boys assaulted Esperanza. That’s when she wanted the most to leave the mango street. Esperanzastarted to write her feelings and let her think she was escaping Mango Street emotionally. Sally was a bad influence in Esperanza’s life. Sally teaches Esperanza many things some good and some bad.Esperanza starts hanging out more with Sally than with Rachel and Lucy who are her true friends. Esperanza’s excitement of having a friend like Sally guides her to sexual embarrassment.
