The Mexican muralists

The Mexican muralists were a group of artists who worked in Mexico mostly between the two world wars. They found inspiration in themes from Mexican history, in pre-Columbiancultures and indigenous people, and in the living and working conditions of their contemporaries. The muralists painted on public buildings because they wanted everybody to have access to their work.The most famous muralist was Diego Rivera. he had studied art in France and Italy before he came back to Mexico and painted his first mural for the government in 1921. Rivera used bright colors andlarge simplified figures. he was very influenced by Azteca art and his murals usually told a story. Some of his most famous murals are in the national palace in Mexico city and show the history ofMexico.

Two other well-known muralists are Jose orzocos and David Siqueiros. orozcos style was darker than that of Rivera. he was very concerned about human suffering and supported the cause of poorfarmers and workers. his masterpiece is considered to be the 53 murals he painted in the chapel of the hospicio cabañas , showing the history of Mexico .David Siqueiros had fought in the Mexicanrevolutionary was before he went to france and Italy. When he returned to Mexico , he painted very political murals showing the oppression of the working class. he continued to paint and be politicallyactive until his death in Morelos in 1974.
