THE SAVIOR

It was a very cold winter. We had reached temperatures below zero, something that happened very, very rarely. Some schools even closed for a couple of days so that the students wouldn’t catch a cold. I wasn’t lucky enough to free myself from doing homework and partial tests, though.
My phone went off in the dark, letting me know that I needed to get upor else I would lose the bus for school. My clumsy, sleepy palm searched for the source of the noise below my pillow, finding it after a few grabs. The noise faded and I was greeted by a headache.
You again. I thought, as I sat on my bed and reached for my lamp. It was always the left side of my head that hurt. I yawned and stared at one of my pink slippers. Another day, another torture.
“Seeyou at lunch,” I mumbled as I got out of Mom’s car, closing the door behind me. Mom didn’t even say a word to me, and she took off. I sighed as I walked up to my friends, their faces tortured because of the cold wind.
“I hate winter.” I said as I approached them. They moaned in agreement. I pushed my headphones into my ears as I saw the bus coming down the street.
“Did you guys study for theGerman exam? I don’t know shit about German.” Olivia said as she took out her bus pass from her neon green backpack.
“I did,” Audrey answered as she rubbed her hands together in order to warm them up. “It’s not that hard, you know… I made a phrase up to remember the colors,”
“Wow, someone had free time yesterday…” I said as I waited for the rest of the people waiting in line to get in thebus. “I barely opened my notebook.”
The ride to school went by quickly even though it was almost forty minutes. Audrey helped us refresh our memories before the exam. She was really good at languages: she knew Spanish, French, and Portuguese perfectly, and she was the best student in German. Her accent was almost impeccable.
“Good luck,” Our teacher said as she signaled for us to start the test.I went over it quickly to see if I understood everything I had to do.
Damn. I thought as I saw lots of verb conjugations and the ‘possessivpronomens’ in it. I fiddled with my pencil, trying to keep it cool. The teacher looked at the other side of the room, where Joseph King and Louis Randall tried to copy from the nerd, Allison Newman. I discretely turned to my right, where Audrey was answeringher exam quietly. Feeling my eyes on it, she slid the paper a little bit to her left, just to make it easier for me to cheat on the test. I quickly wrote down everything and cleared my throat when I finished.
An hour and twenty minutes later, I finished my exam. Quickly, I grabbed my stuff and threw it carelessly into my purple messenger bag. The teacher smiled and nodded as I handed my testand turned to leave.
Audrey was waiting for me outside the room, and I smiled when we started walking together towards the auditory.
“You saved my life, again,” I said as the chilly air hit my cheeks.
“I know, I know,” She responded as we went downstairs. “It wasn’t that hard, though.”
“For you. We mortals can’t seem to memorize every pronoun and irregular verb in such a short time.”Audrey giggled as we entered the auditorium for out next class. Olivia, who was sitting with Lilly, had saved us some seats. I saw Evan Norris sitting one row behind. He followed me with his gaze until I sat down just in front of him. I felt a sudden loss of weight on my head.
“Leave me alone Norris,” I said as I shook my head. A slight chuckle was all I could hear.
“Gosh, get marriedalready,” Audrey told us.
I glared at my best friend. She knew perfectly how I hated this excuse of a man that just liked to flirt with anything that had a vagina. Audrey gave me one of those ‘Oh, come on, I was just kidding’ smiles as I hastily opened my bag to grab one of my eco-friendly notebooks.
“You know I would gladly marry her, but she doesn’t want to,” Norris said behind us.
