What is a translator?

Being a translator implies the knowledge of a second language, for example, English. With this ability translators are able to conveythe meaning of a text from their native language to a second language and the other way around, generally in a written form.

Apart from this, they need a “stamp of approval “, which is going to be explained next.

1. Accreditation
The accreditation is the certification of competence of translators by private or parastatal translation organizations in various countries, based on a varietyof requirements. These often include a written examination to attest to the translator's skill.
Such accreditations often have no legal effect, and their value lies in the esteem that the translation organization enjoys as an independent authority on good translation.
However, the legal court systems of numerous countries will not admit as evidence any translation performed by a translator theyhave not certified.
As it was mentioned before, each country has his own association or associations that certificate translators. How this works in Chile is going to be explained below, including two examples of International Institutions.

Chilean Accreditation
The accreditation in Chile is usually given to graduated students by their corresponding university. At the same time, universitiesare certified by the National Accreditation Commission.

Another way accreditation is given is by taking particular tests as:

1. TOEFL stands for Test of English as a Foreign Language. The test is designed to measure the English proficiency of non-English speaking people. This test is scored on a scale from 0-300, is valid for two years and then is deleted from the official database.There are two formats: pBT and iBT, which are divided into four sections.

2. IELTS is the International English Language Testing System which tests English proficiency across the globe. It is managed by three international organizations: British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL).
