United Nations
The name "United Nations" was coined by United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt. It was first used in the Declaration by United Nations of 1 January 1942
The forerunner of theUnited Nations was the League of Nations. It was an organization, wich was created in similar conditions during the first World War. It was established in 1919 under the Treaty of Versailles "topromote international cooperation and to achieve peace and security." The League of Nations couldn’t prevent the Second World War and the members decided to end with it. Although the League was abandoned,most of its ideals and some of its structure were kept by the United Nations.
When the Second World War was over, the leaders of Britain, China, US and Russia discussed the details of a post-warorganization. They meet in Washington, DC and prepared a blueprint for an international organization. They work together again in the basis of proposals.
In 1945, representatives of 50 countries met inSan Francisco at the United Nations Conference on International Organization to draw up the United Nations Charter. Poland, which was not represented at the Conference, signed it later and became oneof the original 51 Member States.
The Charter was signed on 26 June 1945. But it officially came into existence on 24 October 1945 (cause all must be ratified) United Nations Day is celebrated on 24October each year.
The United Nations comprises a total of 192 Member States. Its membership has grown almost fourfold (from 51 Member States) since 1945.
When States become Members of the UnitedNations, they agree to accept the obligations of the UN Charter, an international treaty that sets out basic principles of international relations. According to the Charter, the UN has four purposes:* to maintain international peace and security;
* to develop friendly relations among nations;
* to cooperate in solving international problems and in promoting respect for human rights;...
