A chronology of the irish republican army

1914- The Oglaigh na hÉireann nationalist militia is founded, which will be known as Irish Republican Army later on.
1916- Easter Rising in Dublin. The uprising, lead by Patrick Pearse, is crushed and sixteen of its leaders are executed by the British Government. The current IRA is born.
1918- Sinn Fein wins the elections in Ireland with the 70% of the votes.
1919-1921- Independence Warbetween IRA and the British Army.
1920- The Government of Ireland Act creates partition. Twenty-six Southern counties become the Irish Free State and six North- Eastern counties (Northern Ireland) remain part of Britain.
1922- The Anglo-Irish Treaty is signed. It puts an end to the Independence War, establishing the Irish Free State within the British Empire. The United Kingdom keeps the Ulster,mainly inhabited by protestants.
1922-1923- Civil War in Ireland between defenders and detractors of the treaty, lead respectively by Michael Collins and Eamon de Valera.
1948- The Irish Free State becomes a republic and the British Parliament confirms the condition of Northern Ireland as part of the United Kingdom.
1955- The members of the IRA start an attack campaign in order to obtain theunification of the two Irelands.
1967- The Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association (NICRA) is founded.
1969- Great Britain occupies Northern Ireland. Despite the reforms of the civil rights, the worst confrontations of the last 50 years are produced.
1970- Provisional Sinn Fein and Provisional IRA are born as splits of Sinn Fein and the IRA.
1971-The Ulster Defence Association (UDA), the biggestparamilitary unionist group, is founded.
1972- Bloody Sunday takes place: 14 people die in the British Army hands in a peaceful demonstration.
1974- The assembly for Northern Ireland begins: 78 members are elected. The executive administration is collapsed in May after the strike supported by protestant workers against the power-sharing. Direct control is finished.
1979- The IRA starts a seriesof attacks against British citizens and kills the ambassador in Holland Sir Richard Sykes, the voice of the Conservative Party in Northern Ireland Airey Neave and Lord Mounntbatten, cousin of Queen Elizabeth, in different attacks.
1981 - Deaths of ten republicans on hunger-strike.
1984- A bombing attack of the IRA kills five people during a lecture of the British Conservative Party.
1985-Anglo-Irish Agreement signed between Irish and British governments. The Irish government is to gain an advisory role on Northern Ireland, which is confirmed as a part of the United Kingdom unless a majority vote for reunification. Both sides in Northern Ireland reject it.
1991- Mortar attack of the IRA in 10 Downing Street (British Prime Minister seat). No wounded registered.
1993- During the peacenegotiations in December, Great Britain offers Sinn Fein the opportunity to participate in the talks if terrorist violence finishes.
1994- Downing Street Declaration confirms Northern Ireland's right to self-determination, but adds that the people of the whole island have the right to solve problems on the island without interference from outside. Protestant and Catholic paramilitaries declareceasefires. Ian Pasley, leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), rejects it as a 'sell-out'.
1996- The IRA abandons the truce in February by means of a bomb that exploded in the Londoner district of Docklands. Two people were killed and a hundred wounded. Multi-party talks about the future of Northern Ireland begin in June, but Sinn Fein is excluded.
1997- The IRA announces an unequivocalceasefire in July, two months after the victory of Tony Blair's Labour Party over the conservatives of John Major in the general elections. Six weeks later Sinn Fein joins by the first time the peace negotiations.
1998- Belfast or Good Friday Agreement signed between British and Irish governments the 10th of April with the aim of restoring a devolved power-sharing executive in Belfast. Ireland...
