Sense of sight or vision
The eye is the organ of vision. The eye has a complex structure consisting of a lens that focuses light onto the retina. The retina is covered by two types of photoreceptorcells in the shape of rods and cones. The cone-shaped cells are sensitive to light and color are located on the part of the retina called the fovea, wherein the lens focuses light. The rod-shapedcells are not sensitive to color, but have high sensitivity to light. The rods are located around the fovea and are responsible for peripheral vision and night vision. The eye is connected to the brainvia the optic nerve. The point of this connection is called disc or "blind spot" because it is insensitive to light. Scientific experiments have shown that the back of the brain corresponds to thevisual perception in the retina.
The brain combines the two images perceived by our eyes in a single three dimensional image. Although the image on the retina is inverted by the action of the lens, thecorrection and brain perceive objects in their original position. Some experiments with glasses that invert images by means of prisms have shown that individuals go through an initial period ofconfusion, but eventually perceive the images correctly.
Color blindness or dyschromatopsia is a genetic defect that makes it impossible to distinguish colors correctly. People with certain types ofblindness confuse green and red. This can be a disadvantage for certain types of occupations. For a color blind person, a person with normal vision can appear to have ESP, but this term should be reserved forskills beyond the normal range.
