A long journey
The remarkable 4,500-kilometer journey of the monarch butterfly begins east of the Rocky Mountains around late August. The butterflies fly south over Oklahoma and Texas and then crossthe border before finally reaching their destination in the State of Mexico and Michoacán. The monarchs start their journey southward individually, but they gather at points along the migration routeto rest, feed and drink.
The butterflies glide at an altitude of 1.300 meters, taking advantage of warm air currents. They cover about 18 kilometers per hour and travel only during the day. On theway, a large number of wildflowers are needed so the monarchs can store nectar for the long winter. Recent changes in climate have caused high temperatures and drought along the monarch’s route, andmany butterflies have died as a result. But there is another threat to the monarch’s survival: the illegal destruction of oyamel forests in Michoacán where the butterflies spend the winter. As theforests disappear, every year fewer and fewer butterflies survive to make the long flight back north in May.
Un largo viaje
El extraordinario viaje de 4.500 kilómetros de la mariposa monarca comienza aleste de las Montañas Rocosas, cerca de finales de agosto. Las mariposas vuelan hacia el sur a través de Oklahoma y Texas, y luego cruzar la frontera antes de llegar a su destino en el Estado deMéxico y Michoacán.
