Am I Blue?

After reading the story “Am I blue?” by Alice Walker, I found some similarities between humans and animals. We have the need to be loved and accepted and some animals do as well.Walker compared her emotions to the emotions of a horse named Blue. As can be seen in the essay, she portrays her feelings trough imagery. She says that Blue was lonely, sad, and boredand these emotions are also experienced by humans at times. In the story we read that Blue found a mate, which was a brown horse and it got really attached to her, in the same mannerwe as humans are attracted to find love and a companion. According to Walker, Blue’s eyes were showed happiness when found a mate. However, Blue’s mate was taken away after she gotpregnant and Blue’s behavior changed to be from friendly and nice to being aggravated and nag and this happens to some humans as well. I believe Walkers points are ironic andcontroversial in some ways. She stayed at the end of her work that we all would be better if we become vegetarians like she did. Another controversial piece is that she thinks that Indians andslaves are like animals because they are not supposed to have emotions and because our society thinks that human’ emotions are only for whites. I believe this reading probablyshould have been named “Am I sad?” instead of “Am I blue?” because it is merely talking about weak arguments were she pretends to embrace sympathy and emotions with a horse’s freedom. Hermain goal is to show that animals and humans have the same emotions and therefore humans should respect animals and learn from them values of purity and honesty. In my opinion I thinkwe need to respect animals and not hurt them but, we also benefit from eating certain animals that provide good protein for our body in contrast she thinks we are eating misery.
