My group project from a system perspective
Analysis and issues
Working in a group involves not only strategy but also commitment in order to achieve common goals. In addition, a group as a system needs to have different characteristics such as: leadership, harmony, responsibility, creativity, will, organization and cooperation between each member. These are some little things that I learned throughout the process of working as a group in the class of CMST 201. Of course I will go more in depth of what was my perception of the group that I was assigned to. I will also state how my group and I managed little things that would not take us to the goal that we wanted toattain.
The first issue of the group, I was assigned to, was that I was the only guy in the group, I didn’t know how would my inputs affect the group as a whole because since I was the only guy I felt left out, and that is a problem in communications as is stated in chapter two from Galanes and Adams (2013) refer to dialects (Pg. 48-47) that has to deal with dialects, according to the book peoplewith different dialects tend to be less confident than the people that speak the native language. We decided to use the toss the paper activity in order to introduce each other, after the activity I still didn’t seem to connect with the group. I feel that the factors for me to not connect in the group were that I was the only guy, too shy to talk, and also the language was a barrier for me. Asis stated in chapter 5 from our book I was suffering of communication apprehension.
As the group was getting to know each other what I saw was that one my teammates was already taking the role of the leader for the group, since everybody was still not comfortable with the group members. She made most of the decisions in order for us to engage with each other. I believe what Bethany did reallyengaged everybody in the group and we really felt very comfortable as she was assuming the role of the leader, and it stayed that way throughout the whole process.
As the activity was developing, the second time that we met the environment that we were in was good for our group. Even though, it was in the basement of the CSU it was very comfortable not as quiet and I believe that it was better thanstaying in the classroom. When we started to brainstorm and organize ideas to obtain the goal that we wanted I really engaged with the group.
I felt more comfortable talking to them, now I felt that the communication between me and the girls wasn’t going to be a big issue. When it came to brainstorming everybody in my group had a lot of ideas, some of them were a football skit, a classroomproblem, and a party as a matter of fact in my mind I was thinking about even using a green screen to make a good video. We couldn’t decide what we were going to choose so we could start developing a rough draft of what we were going to do. The issue that came up really made the group think on how we were going to tackle the problem. Kelsey wrote all the ideas down that we had, and we decided to take abreak to clear our minds and come back to solve the issue.
After the bathroom break and some food Bethany decided to jump in and help us again with the group issue, she decided that everybody had to choose one idea and then we would pick one idea by decision of vote. This idea really worked with all of us, as a team we decided which scenario was the best suited to use for the activity which wasrelated to conflict. So we decided to go with the party theme because if you really think about it, there are a lot of types of conflicts in a party. The conflict styles stated in the book could easily relate to the theme that we decided to use. The idea was there, now we had to work on it, so we could do a good job, even though we had already some people taking roles we finally decided to make...
