Introduction

The Hangover is the name of the film analyzed in this project. It’s a film about a group of guys going to Las Vegas and had a bachelor’s party and they do all sort of crazy things there, they even get to the point of not remembering what happened the day before. The range age is directed to teenagers and adults because of the content on the film, such as bad language and alittle bit of sexual content and the main characters are Bradley Cooper as Phil, Ed Helms as Stu, and Zach Galifianakis as Allan and Justin Bartha as Doug. The director of the movie is Todd Phillips.

Our film is related to a local/regional varieties context because this is a typical cliché of things that happen at Las Vegas, everything that a group of male friends would do when they arenot around their girlfriends, adding to this being at the sin city. This is something very common in this city and also the bond between male friends is something usual in American culture, it’s something that doesn’t happen very often in our culture; and finally the humor is very different in both cultures.

In the film there is a lot of use of bad words that at a certain point wasunnecessary, and the translation of the movie is a real challenge because the translator had to adapted the bad words into the Mexican culture, that is the reason why we want to detected and analyzed a lot of phrases in the subtitles, there are a lot of varieties and grammatical and phonological differences that we are going to analyze in this project.

Contrastive analysis focuses on thedifference between the languages, in this case English and Spanish are the language that we are going to analyze, we are going to see the context of the movie and the use of the language that the characters use, and from that we are going to start to see the differences and similarities between the two languages and we will offer possible options to improve the translation. We will also give a wideexplanation of slang, Anglicism and idiomatic expression that we found through the entire movie.

Part 1

|Character |English |Spanish |
|Tracy |I’m freaking out |Estoy histerica ||Tracy |Where the hell are you |Donde carajos estan |
|Phil |We fucked up |La cagamos |

In part one there weren’t many differences in the translation, we can say it was pretty accurate. This might be because it is atthe beginning of the movie and not too much is going on, and besides the comedy hasn’t started yet, most of it runs smoothly. There were some phrases that were very interesting because the translator did a really good job at finding the equivalents for them, in part one the bride to be says she’s “freaking out” and the translator wrote “estoy histerica”, she also says “where the hell are you” whichwas translated as “donde carajos estan”, to which Phil responds “we fucked up” being translated as “la cagamos”. We think that it was a very good translation, because was mainly word by word and in these phrases the translation matched very good, there was a good selection of words that at the end gave a good result of a translation.

Part 2

|Character|English |Spanish |
|Sid |There’s something wrong with him |Esta un poco malito |
|Sid |I don’t like him |Es medio mamon |

This part is still at the beginning of the movie...
