- Pick up: learn without consciously studying.

The best way to pick up new vocabulary is by reading a lot.

It’s easy to let foreignlanguage slide if you don’t use them regularly.

I’m afraid to cram any more words into my head.

- On the ball: very attentive/aware.
You have to be really on the ball to understand foreign idioms.

- Babble: speak too quickly and not clearly.Police in Rio picked up an illegal *alien babbling unintelligibly. (*foreigner)
- Unintelligibly: speak in a way that is impossible to understand.
