Ares was the Olympian god of war, bloodlust, and manslaughter personified. He was the only son Zeus and Hera had together, though they did not care much for theirchild. He was also the brother of Hebe and Hephaestus. Ares was a bloodthirsty, war-hungry man who never thought of any consequences for his actions.
Ares is depicted as a good-looking man witha beard, except for some movie appearances where he looks like a vigorous, young man. His throne in the Olympus was said to be covered with human skin. Ares is associated and represented with abloodstained spear, swords, vultures, dogs, and the color red, among other things.
The goddess Hera became pregnant of Ares through a process called parthenogenesis, during which an egg developswithout being fertilized. Hera used a magical herb to get pregnant, with Zeus not participating in the conception. Probably because of this, Zeus disliked Ares since the first moment and barely toleratedhim throughout his childhood.
Ares was once kidnapped, tied to chains, and put in a bronze jar by the Aloadae, two giants called Otus and Ephialtes. He was left there for 13 months. When hewas about to go crazy, the giants’ stepmother Eriboea told Hermes, Zeus’s assistant, what had happened to Ares. Hermes let Ares free and Artemis, who had gone to help Hermes, tricked the giants intokilling each other. Zeus and Hera did almost nothing to try and find Ares, who was then sent to live with the god Priapus. He taught Ares martial arts and how to dance.
During his life, Ares hadaffairs with more than twenty mortal and immortal women. Most of his affairs were long ones, for he had several children with each. His most famous romance was with Aphrodite, the goddess of love. Hisaffair with her resulted in four children. Ares loved Aphrodite so much that when she fell in love with Adonis, Ares morphed into a boar and killed Adonis. However, Aphrodite was married to...
