Traits of the Cold War in the Contemporary Andean Region
Similarities and Differences of Both International Situations

When we analyze the words of professor Farid Kahhat, and werelate them to the recent news about the South American strain, it would appear, as this cold war has not yet concluded. This makes us question the real image that Latin America is trying to project, which does not seem to be the same as their interests. The following will discuss the features of the Cold War that are found in the Andean situation in the current news to comprising countries.

Forcontext, the Cold War (1945-1989) is a product of the Second World War, an ideological confrontation of two powers; communist Soviet Union against the U.S. Western capitalism. There was no direct threat within their geographical boundaries, but there were on the periphery of the international system. Some features of the bipolar system are; both powers control themes, norms and world agendas, thereis also a power of coercion by a permanent competition (ideological, economic, technological and military), military strategy by the need to create allies, and a fried-enemy relationship, among others. This is where the Third World comes into action. With globalization, hope of help directed towards them, against misery and human rights, was no more than a simulated pacification, where the realcauses of the Latin American conflict where left behind, making way for the economic and ideological dependence and the regional militarization (the rise of the organized guerrillas).

First Cold War Trait (Farid Kahhat)

Theauthor raises the hypothetical situation with open and ironic messages of historical evidence, which leaves conclusions about the Cold War in the Andes to personal judgment (Ecuador, Venezuela and Colombia).

Thus, for the specter of Cold War the less intense conflicts where in Vietnam, Korea, Cuba, etc. For the Andean area, the border dispute between Colombia and Venezuela has not been resolved formany years by the use of force. To this similarity we can add the military acquisitions from both countries and the support (economic and ideological) by different respective powers (the United States supports Colombia against the FARC terrorism, and Russia supports Venezuela with military aid). But the improbability that they resort to an armed conflict is due to; the high cost, the economic...
