Resumen
La palabra autopsia significa ver por sí mismo y se usa como sinónimo de necropsia o examen post-mortem. En el ambiente médico y en el público general, la palabratiene una connotación claramente negativa. Quizás si el mejor término sea examen post-mortem, porque representa en verdad un examen médico después de la vida, cuyos objetivos son la búsqueda de las causas de la muerte, el análisis de la enfermedad básica, de sus efectos y complicaciones, así como de las consecuencias de la intervención médica.
La distorsión de la imagen de la autopsia hasignificado una crisis muy profunda en Patología, cuyos efectos se han extendido a la práctica y a la enseñanza de la Medicina misma.
Se define el método de la autopsia histórica como la investigación médico-legal de las causas y las circunstancias de una muerte con interés histórico, sustentada en la interpretación crítica, armónica, jerarquizada y objetiva del conjunto de la información aportadapor documentos y testimonios, cuando no se tuvo acceso directo al cadáver o los restos óseos.
Se presenta la investigación de un confuso hecho violento ocurrido en Uruguay (1972) en el contexto de una tensa situación político-institucional. Los objetivos fueron: comprobar si el método de la autopsia histórica contribuye al esclarecimiento del caso en estudio; determinar las probablescausas de muerte y describir las lesiones sufridas por todas las víctimas, y discutir el manejo médico, desde el punto de vista ético y médico-legal. Como resultado de la aplicación de esta metodología se determinaron los protagonistas del incidente, se efectuó la reconstrucción histórica de las autopsias realizadas, y de las lesiones y causa de muerte de las víctimas no autopsiadas. Se determinó quecinco de las víctimas no recibieron asistencia en el lugar del hecho, así como el tratamiento recibido y la evolución seguida en tres heridos que fueron asistidos.

Abstrac
The word means autopsy see for yourself and is used as a synonym for autopsy or post-mortemexamination. In the medical environment and the general public, the word has a clearly negative connotation. Perhaps if the better term is post-mortem examination, because it represents indeed a medical examination after life, whose objectives are the search for causes of death, the analysis of the basic disease, its effects and complications, as well as the consequences of medical intervention.The image distortion autopsy has meant a profound crisis in Pathology, whose effects have spread to the practice and teaching of medicine itself.
The method of historical autopsy and the forensic investigation of the causes and circumstances of a death with historical interest, based on the review, harmonica, hierarchical and objective interpretation of all the information providedby documents and testimony is defined when no direct access to the body or skeletal remains were reported.
Investigating a confusing violent incident in Uruguay (1972) in the context of a tense political-institutional situation arises. The objectives were to test whether the method of historical autopsy contributes to the clarification of the case study; determine the probable causes ofdeath and describe the injuries suffered by all victims, and discuss medical management, from the standpoint of ethical and medico-legal.
