Chilean Literature
The literature in Chile started with the arrival of the Spanish conquerors to the land of Chile. The Spanish people brought chronists so they can write about what was going on inChile and then show it to the Spanish Crown. In this context one of this chronists was Alonso de Ercilla who wrote “La Araucana” published in Spain in 1574 and describes the fight that the Spanishconquerors and the Mapuches had at in the famous “Guerra de Arauco” this war was also wrote by Pedro de Oña at “Arauco Domado”. Pedro De Oña was the first Spanish chronist born in Chile.
In the late19’s the nuns of Chilean convents characterized by writing Spiritual Letters, Newsletters, autobiographies and epistles.
Later a few group of Chilean people continued with literature following Spanishsteps. But then this ideal of writing started to decline, since a group of persons established that the only way of educating Chilean people was by reading, because it was the only way to “culturise”them.
When the Literature was arrived in Chile, the first movement that was held was Romanticism that had 3 periods 1837, 1852 and 1867.
The First period was denominated as “generacion costumbrista”that characterized by seeing the Chilean customs of an realistic, satiric and a critic point of view. The Second period was the named “generacion romantico-social” that characterized for having a moreradical point of view of the liberal vision. And the third period named “generacion realista” that had a realistic view of what was happening in Chile.
The next period of literature was the“Sociedad literaria de 1842” the objective of this movement was to impulse literature to the juth and to promote literature with a nacional identity. The exponent of this movement was Jose Victorino Lastarriathat also showed originality and rejection to any international movement. This movement lasted 1 year approximately.
