Se celebra casi por igual en todos los pueblos de Latinoamérica y el Caribe. Algunos, que han tomado conciencia de la importancia de los actos de sus habitantespara la consecución de un fin común, han incorporado a sus culturas la tradición de los propósitos que hay que alcanzar en el año nuevo. Esto ocurre generalmente enalguna reunión social relativa a la conmemoración de esta fecha (cena de fin de año o la primera reunión de familiares y amigos del año que apenas comenzó); escostumbre que los concurrentes se comuniquen sus propósitos para de esta manera intercambiar opiniones.
