3.1.2 Good language learners beyond childhood

- There are some persons who seem to have an innate ability to pick up second languagesvery easily to the extent that they speak two or more languages with real facility.


3.1.3 Individual and community repertoires

- Hearing about people who speak several languages, we cansurmise two important sociolinguistic facts:
1. People typically speak more than one language because an extra language does important “social work” for them. When speakers add another language totheir repertoires, they almost always do so for one reason – because that language will be useful to them in their community, or in another community that they want to join.
2. Individuals haveindividualized linguistic repertoires. What makes the difference across individuals are their needs and desires to learn different languages, but perhaps even more so, their opportunities to learn them.- Bilinguals rarely have equal control of both languages, simply because people rarely use two languages in exactly the same situations with the same persons.

3.2 Who is a bilingual?

3.2.1Assessing proficiency

- Who decides that someone is a bilingual. Speakers can identify themselves as bilinguals, or other persons may make the assessment. In either case, the assessment can beabsolute or gradient.

- How professionals assess language proficiency. Linguistic varieties consist of three main systems (phonology, morphology and syntax, and the lexicon). All L1 speakers(native speakers of a language) of at least average intelligence have almost equal competence in the phonology and morphology and syntax of their L1. But a speaker of a second language (L2 speaker) mayhave decidedly more ability in one or two of these systems than the others. And across speakers, this unevenness especially applies to pronunciation skills.
