Life and Family
• Mario Vargas Llosa is a Peruvian novelist, essayist, politician, journalist, and one of the central writers in theHispanic world.
He was born into a middle-class family on March 28, 1936, in the southern city of Arequipa (Peru). Vargas Llosa attended Peruvian private and military schools, studied literature andlaw at the University of San Marcos (1955 to 1957) and attended graduate school at the University of Madrid, from where he received his Ph.D. in 1959. In 1955 he married his aunt, Julia Urquidi, andthey divorced in 1964. A year later, Vargas Llosa married his first cousin, Patricia Llosa, with whom he had three children His first book Los Jefes, was a collection of short stories that werepublished in 1958, when he was 22. •

Beginning and First Major Works
• He first gained attention for The Time of The Hero (1962, translated into English in 1963), a book based on histeenage experiences at a military school Leoncio Prado. Vargas Llosa's next novel was The Green House (1969), a realistic tale of a young Indian girl saved by the nuns only to become a prostitute. Thisnovel won the first edition of the Rómulo Gallegos International Novel Prize in 1967. This work alone accumulated enough awards to place the author among the leading figures of the Latin American Boom.•

In 1969, he writes Conversation in the Cathedral, a 601page narrative of life in Peru during the dictatorship of Manuel Odria during the 1950’s. Because of the persistent theme of hopelessnessin the story, it is known as Vargas Llosa's most bitter novel.

Beginning and First Major Works
• In 1973, Vargas Llosa's first humorous novel, Captain Pantoja and the Special Service, waspublished. The novel portrays Vargas Llosa's continual despise for military bureaucracy and incompetence.
