I would characterize Martha Stewart’s initial public relations response to the chargesagainst her as “reputation management.” By keeping quiet, Stewart was trying to protect the reputation that she worked so hard to build.

I understand why someone would not want to say anything to the public, but because she issuch a popular person and household name, it did not come across very well. The public wasn’t sure how to react to the situation, because Stewart herself didn’t show us how she reacted. No one knewwhat to think.

If I was advising Martha Stewart, the publicrelations strategy and tactics I would recommend would be to just a little more open with the public. I think keeping quiet is a good idea, however, with someone who is in the public eye, the ‘silence’is kind of awkward and uncomfortable. I would have told her to at least make public statement as soon as the charges came out, to ease the public mind.

4. How important, from a public relationsperspective, was her decision to go to jail early?
Martha Stewart’s decision to go to jail early was a good move on her part. By doing so, Stewart showed that she truly wanted to put the past behindher. It also was a good way to let people see that she is ready to move on and to get over this setback in her career and life. I think she gained a little respect, maybe even some public support, byaccepting her sentence and choosing to deal with it promptly.
