Imperialism cause and effect.

In the 1800s, European nations became involved in a new kind of empire building, imperialism, that involved the need for self sufficiency, new markets, and placeswhere they could settle. Imperialism is the ambition of a nation to dominate the political, economic and cultural affairs of another region. Europeans established colonies in Africa, Asia Latin Americaand the pacific.

Some causes of imperialism were: search for resources, trading, naval armies, new markets and slavery. For example Africa was rich in resources. It supplied 90 percent of theworld’s industrial diamonds, most of its cobalt, sisal, palm oil, chromite, cocoa and gold, and at least 20 percent of its manganese, peanuts, coffee, copper and tin. By the end of the 19-century near all ofAfrica had been annexed to Europeans. Europeans were attracted to Africa by its natural wealth.
Opening mines and plantations were extracted. Also wealth for their own use.

Effects ofimperialism were: they make dependent colonies, economic problems and changes in culture. Some effects of imperialism are negative because they conquered colonies and they became dependent colonies this wassometimes bad because the dependent colony relies on the mother country for supplies, this maybe very expensive to the country, for example: Italy imposed their rule on Tripoli but it was harsh becausethe small population of Tripoli violently opposed the Italian rule but they didn’t resist. Italy renamed it as Lybia. But it was a profitless victory for Italy because it was a big expense ofmaintaining troops in Lybia proved a drain of the Italian economy. Also another important effect of imperialism is assimilation, situation in which the people of a colony abandoned their local culture toadopt all aspects of another culture.
