5. SUMMARY OF THE STORY:

Charlotte's Web is a children's novel written by the famous American author E. B. White. The story is about a pig named Wilbur who is saved from being killedthanks to an intelligent spider called Charlotte.

The book begins when a farmer, John Arable, discovers one of his piglets is so weak and decides to kill it. His daughter Fern, begs him to let it live and Mr. Arable let her to have the little piglet as a pet and she names it Wilbur. He lives a few weeks with Fern and then his father decides to sell it to her uncle (Homer Zuckerman) because he istoo big. Although Fern visits him at the Zuckerman’s' farm as often as she can, Wilbur feels so lonely. Suddenly, he meets a gray spider (Charlotte) that wants to be his friend.

Wilbur soon becomes a member of the community of animals who live in Zuckerman's farm. Then, the old sheep of this farm, tells Wilbur that he is going to be killed and eaten at Christmas. He asks Charlotte for helpand she has the idea of writing words in her web to make people think that Wilbur is a magic and wise pig.

Thanks to Charlotte's efforts, and with the help of the rat Templeton, Wilbur lives and goes to the county fair with Charlotte and wins a prize. At the end of her natural life cycle, Charlotte dies at the fair. Wilbur promises Charlotte bringing home with him her sac of eggs and he takescare of them until the little spiders are born. Finally, most of them leave to make their own lives elsewhere, except for three: Joy, Aranea, and Nellie, who stay at Zuckerman’s farm as friends of Wilbur, the brave pig. It is a fantastic story that shows important values like true friendship, justice and loyalty.
