INTRODUCTION

The following paper is going to be about Chile, one of the most interesting countries in South America. The essential information such as economy, religion, population, important places, and others are explained in thefollowing lines.

Chile is located in South America, bordered to the North by Peru, to the east by Bolivia and Argentina, to the west by the Pacific Ocean and to the South by the Antarctic. The country has a number of islands off the coast, including the Juan Fernández islands and Easter Island. Chile is 4,329 km long and nowhere more tan 180 km wide.

The capital of Chile is Santiago, It is aCosmopolitan city. It has several museums, Spanish colonial buildings and parks and taking to it by foot is simply the best way to see it. Santiago also has a wide range of accommodation and restaurants.

Due to its long coastline, clearly Chile’s weather is extremely diverse and unpredictable although it is seasonal in much of the country. Summer is from December to February, autumn from Marchto May, winter from June to August, and spring from September to November.

Chileans are often seen as more for man than others in South America. Hand shaking is the customers from of greeting between men. On informal, social occasions, women usually greet friends with a single kiss on the check. It is very common to entertain at home and it is acceptable for invite is to give a small presentas a token of thanks.

Most Chileans consider themselves Catholic, and undertake baptism and first communion although they may not practice in their adult life. People believe in marriage and even if they are not practicing Catholics, a wedding will still take place in a church. Co-habitation does exist between younger couples although it is not very common; however it is accepted. The divorcerate is higher than the marriage rate, although that is probably because Chile was one of the last countries in the world to make divorce legal in 2004. Chileans also adhere to Catholic death rites.

Economy:
With well-developed industrial and service sectors, Chile has one of Latin America's strongest economies. However, it still depends on export of primary commodities (metals and ores, fruit, fish and wood) for a large proportion of its export earnings. With commodity prices dropping recently, harsher times look likely for the Chilean economy, in line with the straitened financial times across the world.
However, Chile's industrial base has grown substantially over the last decade and includes steel manufacturing, oil production, ship building, and the production of cement andconsumer goods. The mainstay of the export economy is still metals and ores: Chile is the world's leading exporter of copper and also produces zinc, iron ore, molybdenum, manganese, iodine and lithium.
The service sector has developed rapidly, especially financial services. Chile's economic performance has been strong since 2000, although annual growth had dipped slightly in 2008 to 4.1% with a furtherdrop expected in 2009; unemployment was estimated at 7% in late 2007.
Main exports:
Copper, agriculture, wine and fruit, fish, livestock production, wood and wood products and textiles.

Main imports:
Petroleum, vehicles, natural gas, soybean, excavating machinery, electrical and telecommunications equipment.

Easter Island
A lonely volcanic island in themiddle of the Pacific Ocean, as far away from Chile as from Tahiti, Easter Island is famous for its mysterious stone statues that form an almost unbroken ring around the coast. Three hundred statues and related items of stonework, which were built during the 10th to 16th centuries, grace the island. Scientists are fascinated to learn how native inhabitants designed and forged the massive...
