Steps leading up to the Civil War
1) Confusion develops in both north and south due to the Kansas-Nebraska Act and the Dred Scott Decision.
2) Presidential elections of 1860 the newly formedRepublican Party names Abraham Lincoln as their candidate for president.
a. Republican Party is promoting the idea of free soil in the territories.
b. Southern states fear that as more non-slave statesenter the union, this will lead to Congress being dominated by non-slave states and slavery will be voted out of existence.
3) Lincoln wins the presidency because the Democratic Party is dividedbetween northern and southern candidates.
4) 11 southern states leave the union and form the Confederate States of America with Jefferson Davis as their president with their capital in Richmond, Virginia.5) Many union military leaders like Robert E. Lee and “Stonewall” Jackson renounce their commissions and join the confederate army.
6) South starts the war by firing at Fort Sumter, a union fort.7) Lincoln asks Congress for a declaration of war and receives it.
8) The Civil War in the United States begins in 1961 with the defeat of the south and the lost of 600,000 lives.

1) Democratic Party made up of immigrants and working men.
2) Congress begins a program called radical reconstruction.
a. South divided into 5 military districtswith a military general in charge of each. This is done to ensure that the South complies with:
1. 13th Amendment, which frees the slaves..
2. 14th Amendment, which makes them citizens.
3. 15thAmendment, which gives them the right to vote.
3) Blacks support the Republican Party and elect a number of black to political office.
4) Southern states receive more seats in the House of Representativesas Southern blacks are now counted as one and not three-fifths.
