The Dutch Government considers nuclear energy important in the transition to a sustainable energy supply. Nuclear power stations do not emit CO2 and nuclear power increases thereliability of supply.
Nuclear power also reduces Dutch dependence on oil and gas exporting countries. The Government wants to offer scope for a second nuclear power station in the Netherlands.
Recently, the Netherlands:
- Became the first nation to abandon the EU-wide target of producing 20 per cent of its domestic power from renewables by 2020.
- Reduced its targets for renewable energy, such aswind and solar energy, and reduced subsidies from 4 billion euros to 1.5 billion euros. If the Danes cannot show a profit from their wind turbine investments with a national wind capacity factor of 0.242, then the Dutch would certainly not show a profit from their wind investments with a national wind capacity factor of 0.186, and neither would the Germans with a national wind capacity factor of0.167; the losses are reflected as higher electric rates.
The Netherlands policy U-turn means that:
- The EU renewable targets aren't set in stone; other nations will follow the Dutch.
- There are more cost-effective ways of reducing CO2, such as nuclear energy and increased energy efficiency.

DEVELOPMENT
What happened at the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan arouses fear and concern amongthe Dutch population, however, public opinion on nuclear power has barely changed in the Netherlands. This emerges from a survey developed by the researcher Maurice de Hond at the request of Radio Nederland. Fukushima is currently considered as a major catastrophe that will surely aggravate further. This was considered 71% of the Dutch.
Already 25 years ago that was recorded at the nucleardisaster at Chernobyl, Ukraine, and while nuclear power generation involves many risks and process nuclear waste is a real problem, CO2 emissions are lower. For this reason, nuclear power plants remain popular both among politicians and among the population.
Scapegoat:
Gradually the resistance to nuclear power has been giving. The research results of Maurice de Hond seem to confirm this. In 2005, 47%of the population approved the government's decision to build new nuclear power plants, in October last year, this figure had risen to 51%.
It was hoped that the disaster in Japan that citizens did radically change their minds. So far it seems that it is not. Currently, 47% of the Dutch think it's a good idea to grant new licenses for the construction of nuclear power plants. When compared withlast year's figures, the decline was only 4%.
Pros:
Nuclear Vision Foundation is strongly in favor of nuclear energy. This organization is the use of nuclear energy in the coming decades as a compromise until they discover better energy sources. Fossil fuels are running out and the political situation in the countries producing oil and gas is not always stable. Nuclear Vision's opinion has notbeen altered by the fact that the disaster occurred in Japan. As we said the secretary Boersma. "We have not changed my mind, but the use of this technology requires constant attention and great care. One must know how to learn from these situations. I compare it to the square air navigation. "
Reasonableness:
In Germany, tens of thousands have taken to the streets to protest against nuclear power.Last Saturday was mobilized some 60,000 demonstrators in Stuttgart. Why not see any of this in Holland? Boersma said: "I have the impression that the way in which the Netherlands react to nuclear energy has become more sensible than 20 years ago. And that's understandable because you have to look at things from a point of view as rational as possible. "
This impression is also reflected in...
