Resumen
En el presente artículose analiza la crisis entre Roma y Cartago, revisando las causas que originan la Segunda Guerra Púnica y el conflicto del

Mediterráneo Occidental. En primer lugar, se examina el realismo clásico
en las relaciones internacionales y las problemáticas que surgen como
paradigma de estudio.Asimismo, se revisan los antecedentes de la Segunda Guerra Púnica, dentro de lo que encontramos el problema del dominio
de Sicilia y las consecuencias del conflicto romano-cartaginés-siracusano.
Por otro lado, se estudia el poder entre las potencias en conflicto, comprendiendo esta lucha a raíz de la búsqueda de una hegemonía territorial e intereses que buscan conservar el statu quo. Por último, seanalizan las relaciones internacionales y el equilibrio de poder, revisando el problema de la
seguridad y defensa entre los actores involucrados. De esta manera, se

puede comprender cómo el inicio de laSegunda Guerra Púnica se encuentra vinculado a los intereses expansionistas entre Roma y Cartago, y los
conflictos existentes en torno al statu quo, combatiendo por la defensa y
seguridad de sus territorios y buscando reafirmar su poder y dominio sobre
el otro.

Abstract
This paper analyzes the crisis betweenRome and Carthage, reviewing
the causes that lead to the Second Punic War and the conflict in the
Western Mediterranean area. It starts by examining the theory of Realism
in International Relations and the affairs that arouse as paradigms of study.
At the same time it reviews the background that forewent the Second Punic
War; the control imposed over Sicily and the consequences ofCarthaginian-Syracusan-Roman's conflict. This paper also studies the issues of

result of the search for territorial hegemony and the interests to preserve
the status quo. Finally, it discusses International Relations and the Balance
of Power, reviewing the issue of Security and Defense between the actors
involved. Following the arguments bolstered throughout this paper, the
beginning of the SecondPunic War can be linked to the expansionist interests of Rome and Carthage and to the conflicts related with the status quo
that lead to struggles for the defense and security of their territories aiming
to reaffirm each other’s own power and dominance.

Introducción
Aproximar un estudio al problema hegemónico entre Roma y Cartago
durante el siglo III a.C., nos conlleva a analizar la situación política existente entre ambos estados, como también sus intereses dentro del escenario
políticointernacional. La confrontación que nace entre ambos estados se
basa en el conflicto del dominio de un espacio determinado, es decir, el
Mediterráneo Occidental. El mar, sus costas y el territorio que implica, dan
cuenta de un lugar que resulta beneficioso para quien lo posea; por una
parte, se puede concebir como un espacio estratégico de poderío económico y redes comerciales, mientras que por otro...
