The Italian University System
The Italian University System is divided into three cycles. The first cycle consists of “Corsi di Laurea” (Laurea Degree Courses) giving students an adequate knowledge of scientific methods and contents as well as specific professional skills.Essential admission requirement is the Italian school leaving certificate or a foreign certificate considered as an equivalent. Laurea Degree Courses last 3 years. The “Laurea” Degree (first degree) is awarded to undergraduates who have earned 180 credits. The second cycle consists of “Corsi di Laurea Magistrale” (University Master Degree Courses). University Master Degree Courses last two years andare advanced scientific courses or higher continuing education studies. Essential admission requirement is the Laurea (First) Degree. The third cycle (post-graduate studies) consists of “Corsi di Dottorato di Ricerca” (Research Doctorate Programs). Research Doctorate Programs last 3 years and aim at training postgraduates for very advanced scientific research. In order to obtain this third degreecandidates have to write an original dissertation. Essential admission requirement is the Second Degree. Exams are evaluated according to a 30-point scale (marks range from 18/30, minimum mark to pass, to 30/30 e lode). As regards the final grading system (when graduating), marks range from 66/110, minimum mark, to 110/110 and, just in case, first-class honours (“summa cum laude”).
