Exploring Circles
A circle is a plane figure with all of its points at the same distance from a point called the center. Many objects that you use every day are circular or have parts that are circular. The distance around a circle is called the circumference (s∂r kum f∂r eus). The longest distance through the center of a circle is called the diameter (diam΄e ter). In the activity that follows,you will measure the circumference and the diameter of each of several circular objects. Then you will determine if there is a mathematical relationship between the circumference and the diameter of a circle.
The Kinetic Particle Model
The particles that make up all materials are in constant motion. This model is known as the kinetic (ki net΄ik) theory of matter. The word kinetic comes from“kine”, the Greek word prefix, which means “motion”. It takes energy to move materials. When you ride a bicycle, you use muscular energy. If you wish to go faster, you must pedal harder to supply more energy. The more energy you supply, the faster you will move.
It also takes energy to move even the smallest particles. The kinetic theory of matter states that the more energy supplied to particles ofmatter, the faster they will move.
