DIABETES

Diabetes is a disorder of metabolism, the process that turns the food we eat into energy. Insulin is the most important factor in this process. During digestion food isbroken down to create glucose, the main source of fuel for the body. This glucose enters the bloodstream, where insulin allowed to enter the cells. (Insulin is a hormone secreted by thepancreas, a large gland behind the stomach).

In people with diabetes, one of two components of this system fails:
Type 1
The pancreas does not produce insulin or produces toolittle.
Type 2
The body cells do not respond to the insulin that is produced.
Types of Diabetes

There are two major types of diabetes.
In Type I, insulin dependent, sometimes calledjuvenile diabetes because it usually begins in childhood (but may also occur in adults). Because the body does not produce insulin, people with Type I diabetes must inject insulin tolive. Less than 10% of those affected by diabetes have type I.

In type II, which arises in adults, the body does produce insulin, but either do not produce enough, or can not takeadvantage of it produces. Insulin can not escort the glucose into the cells. The type II usually occurs mainly in people from the forties.

The importance of good control of diabetesThis defect of insulin causes the glucose in the blood is concentrated, so that the body is deprived of its main source of energy. Besides the high levels of glucose in the bloodcan damage blood vessels, kidneys and nerves.

There is no cure for diabetes. Therefore, the method of health care for people affected by this disorder, is control: keep glucose levelsin the blood as close as possible the normal. Good control can greatly help in preventing diabetes complications related to the heart and circulatory system, eyes, kidneys and nerves.
