Differences Between Ionic And Covalent Compounds

Páginas: 2 (362 palabras) Publicado: 7 de noviembre de 2012
Hypothesis
By testing the different compounds we can find the difference between ionic and covalent compounds.

Materials
• 24 well micro plates
• Wood splints
• 100-ml beakers
• Micro scaleconductivity testers
• Spatula
• Forceps
• Benzoic Acid, (C6H5COOH)

• Magnesium Chloride, (MgCl2)

• Petrolatum, (Vaseline)

• Potassium Iodide, (KI)

• Sodium Sulfate, (Na2SO4)

•Sucrose, (C12H22O11)

• Camphor

• Cyclohescane
• Distilled water

Method
• To test the solubility in water we used small amounts of each compound and then we diluted them with water.
• Totest the solubility in cyclohescane we used small amount of each compound and then we diluted them with cyclohescane.
• Using a conductivity tester, we tested the conductivity as a solid and when itwas diluted in the solution.
• We measured the hardness by touching and feeling the compounds.
• We identify the odor by wafting the compounds.
• We measured the relative point by heating andfeeling the compounds and determining if it is high or low.

Conclusion
Afterfollowing the procedures and gathering the answers I concluded that 3, out of the 7 compounds tested, were ionic. The ionic ones were sodium sulfate, magnesium chloride, and potassium iodide. Meanwhile4, which were camphor, sucrose, petrolatum, benzoic acid, were covalent. By this being concluded I can finally say that the melting points of ionic compound are higher to the melting points of...
