Cow’s Eye Dissection:
The eye is a special sensory organ with a complex structure and function. The objective was to gain a better understanding of the structure and the function of the eye. In thislab, we set out to dissect a cow's eye and identify the different parts of the eye. We did this by removing the fat and muscle surrounding the eye to reveal the sclera, and be able to make anincision in the middle of the eye to reveal the inner parts of the eye; the vitreous humor, ciliary body, choroid and retina. Once all the parts were identified, we received a clearer understanding of howeach part of the eye affected the whole eye.
We started off by carefully removing all of the excess fat and muscle tissue surrounding the eye with a scalpel or scissor(fat and muscle tissue- thick graytissue that covers most of the outer part of the eye.). After it was removed and the sclera was visible (white outermost layer of the eye covered in fat and muscles.), we made an incision around themiddle of the eye to where one half of the eye was the anterior part and the other posterior. We proceeded to carefully remove the clear gelatinous liquid know as the vitreous humor. Next, we took thefront half of the eye with the cornea and with a pair of scissors we cut off the cornea. This allowed us to locate the iris. We then flipped the front part of the eye to locate the ciliary body.After locating the ciliary body we took out the lens by pulling it out. With this done, we removed the retina, a thin tissue like material, which is located in the posterior part of the eye. Witheverything removed, we were able to observe the choroid coat, which is a very shiny colorful tissue. Notice that the choroid coat in the cow's eye is very colorful and shiny. This reflective material isthe tapetum lucidum, and its reflective properties allow a cow to see at night by reflecting the light that is absorbed through the retina back into the retina.
