Day to day pressures are increasing. Divorce, career burnout, and stress related illnesses are at all time highs. Meanwhile, employers arechallenged to increase employee productivity in a sluggish economy and find ways to fund rising health insurance premiums. These demands are not going away. However, there are options to minimize thestrain on our individual and organizational well-being.
Our approach to care is holistic, centering not only on the presenting concern, but also on underlying issues. Take for instance, Rory.*Rory called LifeMatters due to marital problems he was experiencing. He and his wife had been experiencing financial strain and had decided to separate. Rory was especially concerned about his 17 yearold son who had become very argumentative in the past few months. On the other hand, his 10 year old daughter was doing better than ever. After providing immediate support, our counselor provided Rorywith a referral for inperson counseling. We also provided a legal referral to help protect his family during a separation and a financial referral to reduce his debt and set up a budget. Resources wereprovided for Rory to learn ways to support his son during this challenging time. The counselor also suggested that Rory continue to monitor his daughter who, though doing exceptionally well, could bemasking some of her pain by trying to be perfect. Finally, Rory was given suggestions about good self-care and seeking support for himself.
