Human Endurance
What the body can survive
In addition to being highly complex, the human body is also very strong and resilient.
Throughout our lives, our bodies deal with physical illness and pain, as well as emotional stresses such as taking test at school, losing a job, or sitting in traffic all of which put pressure on our nervous system and heart.
Everyone experiences stress in theworkplace, but there are certain jobs that test a person’s endurance and put a greater strain on one’s health. Astronauts, for example, suffer from loss of calcium and other important minerals in their bones almost as soon as they go into space. Also, many astronauts lose bone density and muscle strength while in space because they are floating, rather than walking, for long periods of time. For thisreason, when an astronaut returns to earth, he or she may have difficulty walking.
Athletes push themselves to the limits of physical and mental endurance by regularly trying to go faster, higher, and further in their chosen sport than any other athlete has in the past. In doing this, many athletes risk injury to themselves. Many spend weeks or months recovering from damage they have done to theirbodies while in training.
The world’s finest athletes gather at the Olympic Games every two years. At this event, they demonstrate both their athletic skill as well as their strength. At the Sydney Olympics in 2000, a british athlete- Steve Redgrave- showed the world what the human mind and body could do. Redgrave won Olympic gold medals for rowing in 1984,1988,1992, and 1996, as well as nineworld championship gold. He was one of the best athletes In his sport.
During the long training periods leading up to the Sydney Olympics, Steve had numerous health problems. He had surgery for appendicitis in 1997, and in 1998 he was diagnosed with diabetes. This meant that he had to give himself daily injections of insulin to help him control his blood sugar. Instead of giving up rowing a veryphysically demanding sport, Redgrave chose to continue the exhausting training necessary for the Olympics, even though his body was sick.
At the Sydney Games Steve and his team rowed to victory, and his fifth Olympic gold medal. It was an amazing achievement for Redgrave, who proved to the world how determination can help one to cope with, and overcome, an illness.

YOU ARE AMAZING, YOU AREHUMAN!
You are made of seventy-three percent water. You have 206 bones. There are more sweat glands in your feet in any other part of your body. There are about sixty muscles in your face; you use twenty of them to smile but forty to frown. Your heart beats over 100,000 times each day. You really are amazing!.
The human body is a complex machine. From the day we are born our bodies grow and change inresponse to our environment, diet, and habits. The body has many different organ systems and parts that work together to allow us to breathe, move, see, talk, and digest food all at the same time. Most of the time we are unaware of what is happening in our bodies; usually it is only when we get sick or feel pain that we notice.
Many people do not take enough care of their complex machines. Badhabits like smoking, drinking too much alcohol, and eating junk food damage our bodies. Stress can also cause health problems. People who worry a lot or have busy jobs often don’t get enough sleep, or don’t eat properly. We also damage our bodies by playing sports or having accidents. In 1999, Americans made more than 102,000,000 visits to emergency rooms. The two most common reasons were forinjury and poisoning. ER patients were also treated for many other medical problems-from bad cuts and broken bones to serious illnesses that needed surgery.
Just like any machine,, different body parts sometimes go wrong from old age. In fact, in the U.S; in 1998, between sixty and seventy percent of all visitors to the ER were aged seventy-five or over. Fortunately, older people who suffer from an...
