Emile Durkheim: society and function
❖ Who was Emile Durkheim?
He was a French sociologist, that formally established the academic discipline, and with Marx and Weber is commonly knownas the architect of social science.
He came from a long line of devout French Jews: his father, grandfather and great-grandfather were rabbis, but at an early age he decided not to follow hisfamily´s footsteps. There have been long and different discussions about whether or not the Jewish thought influenced his achievements.
He set up the first European department of sociology atUniversity of Bordeaux, publishing his Rules of the Sociological Method, and pioneered modern social research as well as served to distinguish social science from psychology or political philosophy.He refined the positivism promoting epistemological realism and the deductive model. For him sociology was the science of institutions, and its aim: to discover structural social facts: Sociologyshould study phenomena attributed to society at large, rather than being limited to the specific actions of individuals.
He remained a dominant force in French intellectual life until his death in1917.

Emile Durkheim’s great insight was recognizing that society exits beyond us. Is more than the individuals that compose it. It was there beforewe were born, shapes us while we live and will remains long after we´re gone.
Patterns of human behaviour exist as established structures: social facts that have an objective reality.Because society is bigger than anyone of us, it has the power to guide our thoughts and actions. That´s why studying individuals alone can never capture the heart of the social experience.
