EMPLOYMENT CORRESPONDENCE
• The most important for your personal career are
the letters you write to apply for a job.
Employment correspondence mustgive a
prospective employer a positive-and desirablepicture of your personality, background, and
experiences.
• Try to include on your list any FACTS that could
help an employer see your valueas an
employee.

THE RESUME
• It is an OUTLINE of all you
have to offer a new
employer. It presents your
qualifications, backgrounds,
and experiences in a way
that will convince abusiness
person to grant you and
interview.

LETTERS OF
APPLICATION
• Its purpose is to attract
an employer’s attention
and persuade her to grant
you an interview. A letter
of applicationserves as
the COVER LETTER of
your resume.

FOLLOW-UP
LETTERS
• Few people nowadays
send a follow-up letter
after an interview. It
can
be
highly
effective. A reference
to
a
successfulmoment
at
the
interview is a good,
personalizing touch.

LETTERS OF
REFERENCE AND
RECOMMENDATION
• A recommendation is an
endorsement
while
a
reference is simply a
report. Arecommendation
is persuasive while a
reference verifies facts.

DECLING A JOB
OFFER
• You
should
send
a
courteous, discreet letter
declining the job. By doing
so, you will preserve apotentially
valuable
business contact and leave
open the possibility of
future employment.

REJECTING A JOB
APPLICANT
• A personal letter explaining
specific reasons for an
applicant’srejection
is
professional and preferable.
But a form letter is more
often used to reject, in
general
terms,
all
the
unsuccessful candidates.

LETTER OF RESIGNATION
• Must convey anegative
message as positively as
possible. You may be delighted
to be leaving or feel hostile
toward your former boss, but
your letter of resignation
should express regrets, not
anger.
