1. Why does “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” by R.L. Stevenson deal only with men and not women?

The novel contains very few references to women, and these who are mentioned aredescribed as weak, scared and somehow irresponsible.
The major characters in the novel do not have any female relationship. Even in the descriptions of moral deprived behavior of Mr. Hyde, there is nomention of any sexual encounters or illicit relationships.
There are only 3 references to women in the book:
A young girl running through a London street at three o’clock in the morning on her way tolook for a doctor.
The maid who witnesses Sir Danvers Carew's murder.
One of Dr. Jekyll´s servants.

There is a lot of speculation about the reasons for the absence of female references in thebook. In my opinion, the reasons are:

In the Victorian Society, the figure of the woman acts as a “moral model” in most novels. It is a reference of good moral influence and correct behavior. If R.L.Stevenson had introduced women in the novel, he would have complicated the story. In other words, the writer did not want to lose the focus on the main topics of the novel (internal fight between goodand evil in Jekyll´s soul, love and hate, the dual nature of every single man)
On other hand, I think that Stevenson wanted to criticize Victorian values: all around England, he realized thatalthough apparently most noblemen seemed to be educated and correct citizens, internally they had some secrets (double moral, lack of ethic,…) There are many critics that say Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is aself-admission by R.L Stevenson of his own dark nature.
Dr. Jekyll goes against the typical Victorian expectation of gentlemanly behavior: you were expected to be reserved, scholarly, and religious.Jekyll realized he had dark desires and he created a potion that allowed him to become someone else. Dealing with women would have been more difficult to introduce in the story.
