Alex Garland was born in London, England, in 1970. The son of cartoonist Nick Garland, he wasbrought up in a house where people concerned themselves with social and political issues and held strong views. His family encouraged him to travel and put no pressure on him to conform and settle down.After finishing the school, he spent six months in Southeast Asia, and he has returned every year since. His travels there have had an obvious influence on his first novel, which is set on the beautifulbeaches on Thailand. In 1992, he received a B.A. in art history from Manchester University and hoped to carve out a profession for himself as a cartoonist, following in his father’s foot steps.However, he quickly became no interested in narrative than drawing and, frustrated with the limitations of cartoon strips, desired to embark on writing his first novel. He states that he started writingfiction not out of compulsion, but has an alternative to the conventional careers that most of his friends had chosen, with the stressful, driven lifestyles that they entail. He lives in London andoccasionally works as an illustrator and freelance journalist.
