The Anglo-Saxon

The objective of this essay is to know more about the history of the English language, and how it was developed through the years. The term Anglo-Saxon is arelatively modern one. It refers to settlers from the German regions, which made their way over to Britain after the fall of the Roman Empire around AD 410. The Saxons ruled England for 600 years, forming thebasis of its culture, language and borders.
The small island of Great Britain has been invaded and settled many times: by Celts, by the romans, by the Angles and Saxons, by the Vikings, and by theNormans. Whatever we think of as "English" today owes something to each of the invaders.
The Celts were a group called Britons; the religion of the Celts seems to have been a form of animism. They sawspirits in everything: rivers, flowers, fire, and thunder. The mythology of the Celts has influenced English writers to this day.
Finally, the Britons were conquered by the legions of Rome. Theromans were great administrators and great builders. They built a network of roads, some still used today, and a great defensive wall.
During Roman rule, Christianity gradually took hold under theleadership of European missionaries.
When the Romans withdrew, new invaders came. In the middle of the fifth century, Angles and Saxons from Germany and Jutes from Denmark settled the greater part ofBritain. The language of the Anglo—Saxons became the dominant language in the land which was to take a new name – Engla land or England for the angles.
They were great warriors; they didn’t live in citiesas now because they preferred the country life. Most Anglo-Saxons were farmers. They lived in family groups in villages. Since they lived close to the sea and big rivers, many Anglo-Saxons weresailors too. They built wooden ships with oars and sails, for trade and to settle in new lands. Their beliefs were similar to those of the Celts. Anglo-Saxons were superstitious.
