Course description:

Course sequence and content:
Presentation of vocabulary:
with images, posters and realia. We will work with drillings and pronunciation. Students will develop their speaking, listening and writing.
Process of the firstappointment:
Ss will watch videos of first appointment
Will learn the common phrases, questions and answers
Will practice everything they need to learn by role plays
Medical history:
Students will learn to make questions
By practicing with role plays and drills
Several activities like working with their partners or with worksheets.

We decided to divide this course in three parts:-Process of first appointment
-Medical history
-Vocabulary of dentist
We noticed that it is important for dentists to learn these three steps in order to have a normal conversation with clients. It is very important for them to learn how to say in English the normal process they follow every time they are in a first appointment with a client, this part is where they get to know the patient and theproblem he/she has.
This is an occupational course designed for dentists; we decided to work with this profession because we have met dentists who have had the necessity of speaking English. Some of their clients come from USA or other countries, these clients most of the time speak English which is the Universal language. We were told by the dentists about the necessity they have of learningthe language because of all the opportunities they loose for not being able to communicate with them.
We did a needs analysis in order to know the vocabulary, grammar and phrases that are more common or necessary in this area. We went to the dentist’s office to make this needs analysis and we had the opportunity of observing a client that was there for his first appointment. It was thenwhen we got a format of a common conversation and its sequence. We were able to see how the dentist makes the medical history to his clients, too. We made a list of all the common questions he/she makes to the patient and the possible problems that the dentist may say the patient has.
We were able to make a list of vocabulary they need to learn based on the observations, the sheet they haveto fill in the medical history and the interviews we made them.
Based on the necessity of students we took some decisions in order design our course. Decisions like the time each class will last, when will the course take place and where.
Our objective during this course is a learning oriented objective because in order to have a good product, dentists able to speak English, we needed todesign a course focusing a lot in the quality of their learning. We expect to be achieving our goals during the whole process, that way we are going to have the opportunity to change the syllabus if necessary, if the results are not those that we expected since the beginning. Three of our objectives in the course are:
1- Dentists will recognize and pronounce the vocabulary in English.
2-Dentists will be able to maintain a doctor-patient conversation in English.
3- Dentists will be able to understand and explain the problem that the patient has.


As you can see, these objectives are to be monitored by the teacher and extremely important to achieve.
Our methodology is to create opportunities to learn, our students are going to learn by speaking, during a dentist appointmentit is all about communication between doctor and patient, that is why speaking is the skill we need to focus on, it is the skill they need.
