El puertorriqueño actual y la gestión del patrimonio cultural para un desarrollo urbano sustentable
Juan Hiram Ortiz Abstract To understand the Puerto Rican cultural heritage it is necessary to scrutinize the ways in which the points of view of the actual Puerto Rican (“puertorriqueño actual”)have been set over the socio-cultural sphere. Only this way we could comprehend how Puerto Rico’s cultural heritage policies have been articulated. Starting from the analysis of the actual Puerto Rican approaches, this essay intends to free the cultural heritage’s agent of obsolete essentialisms. The rigid and static views of the historical process stand in the way towards sustainable development,which aims to integrate the ongoing transformation of tangible and intangible aspects of the urban environment. Here the cultural heritage tourism management takes an important role. Tourism provides economic tools to the heritage’s agent to elaborate his plan for development, taking in account the integration of the public, private, and community sectors. This time, the proposed sustainable urbandevelopment is far from intimate with essentialist ideologies. Instead, we look for feasible options to start seeing the past from the present. Meanwhile, there’s a need to filtrate the past it in the contemporary experience, to transform our perceptions. We could finally safeguard its results for the future generations. As a final point in this essay, this paper puts forward an update of thenotions about the actual Puerto Rican in order not only to transform our cities, but to barter even our worldview in the contemporary society.

Resumen Para entender el patrimonio cultural puertorriqueño hay que indagar las formas de mirar el ámbito socio-cultural el puertorriqueño actual. Sólo de este modo podemos comprender cómo se han articulado laspolíticas acerca del patrimonio cultural de Puerto Rico. A partir de los enfoques del puertorriqueño actual, este ensayo ausculta las maneras de liberar al gestor del patrimonio cultural de esencialismos obsoletos. Las visiones rígidas y estáticas de los procesos históricos entorpecen el camino hacia un desarrollo sustentable que aspire a la integración de la constante transformación de losaspectos tangibles e intangibles del entorno urbano. Aquí la gestión turística del patrimonio cultural toma un rol fundamental. El turismo brinda las herramientas económicas al gestor del patrimonio para que elabore su plan de desarrollo, tomando en cuenta la integración del sector público, el privado y el comunitario. Esta vez, la propuesta de desarrollo urbano sustentable está lejos de intimarse conideologías esencialistas. Más bien, busca opciones viables para mirar el pasado desde el presente, filtrarlo en la experiencia actual, transformarlo e intentar salvaguardarlo para las futuras generaciones. En este ensayo proponemos actualizar la noción del puertorriqueño actual con el propósito no sólo de transformar la ciudad, sino de trocar incluso nuestra visión de mundo en la sociedadcontemporánea.
